If you're under 18 and your mom has a contract under her name can you still cancel your plan?

My friend got an individual plan in May this year and he's under 18 so he couldn't have a 2 year contract so his mom put it under her name so does that mean he can't cancel the account before two years now? He doesn't want to be in the plan anymore because it's too much.
