3 sim card not activated on Iphone?

I have an iphone 3gs and started with a pay as you go orange sim card. About a week ago I changed the sim so I have a 3 network pay monthly contract. My phone was unlocked when I got it but with this 3 sim it only has one bar of signal and when I check the network is says 'not available'. Is there anything I can do?
